EPFO: The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization has recently implemented a directive from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) by removing Aadhaar as a valid proof for date of birth. This decision comes as part of the ongoing efforts to streamline documentation processes and enhance data security.
In adherence to the UIDAI’s guidelines, EPFO has revised its list of accepted documents for establishing the date of birth, ensuring compliance with the latest regulatory standards. This move aims to provide clarity to EPFO members and facilitate smoother transactions by specifying alternative documents that can now be used to verify the date of birth in EPFO records.
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation, operating under the Ministry of Labour and Employment of the Government of India, has declared that Aadhaar cards will no longer be accepted as valid proof for establishing the date of birth. The official announcement was made through a circular (No: WSU/2024/1/UIDAI Matter/4090) released on Tuesday.
This decision, approved by the Central Provident Fund Commissioner (CPFC), marks a significant shift in documentation requirements for EPFO members. The move is in alignment with regulatory changes and is aimed at enhancing the accuracy and reliability of the information maintained by the EPFO. Members are advised to refer to the updated list of acceptable documents for date of birth verification in light of this recent development.
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation has acted in accordance with a directive from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). UIDAI’s Circular No. 08 of 2023 clarified that Aadhaar, often used as proof of date of birth by beneficiaries, is not officially recognized as such under the Aadhaar Act, 2016. While Aadhaar serves as a unique identifier, UIDAI emphasized that it is only considered a proof of identity and not a valid document for establishing one’s date of birth. EPFO’s decision aligns with UIDAI’s guidelines to ensure accurate and compliant documentation practices.

EPFO Removes Aadhaar for Date of Birth Correction
In response to a directive from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation has officially excluded Aadhaar from the list of accepted documents for correcting the date of birth. The circular specifies that this exclusion is applicable to Table-B of Annexure-1 within the previously issued Joint Declaration Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
EPFO plans to modify its application software to comply with the updated guidelines, with the Internal System Division (ISD) overseeing these necessary changes. The organization has instructed all zonal and regional offices to ensure the widespread implementation of these updated directives. Notably, recent court judgments, including one from the Bombay High Court, have emphasized that Aadhaar cannot serve as proof of date of birth.
